Personally Procured Move Reimbursement
Formerly called a (Do-It-Yourself) DITY move, these are moves where you will pack and ship everything on your own.
If you pack yourself during your military relocation, it’s probably for one or more reason:
The first is to be in complete control, especially if you have high-end items, or family heirlooms you want treated with care.
The second is because you already have a place to move into, and don’t want any delay in having your home set-up.
The third is to potentially earn some money at the end of the PCS.
Regardless of the reason, the costs can add up quick.
We recommend keeping careful track of what you spend:
Look through the house for items you already have – such as labels and markers.
Go to a local store, such as Target or Bed Bath and Beyond, and ask if the night crew is willing to save you some boxes. If there aren’t any available, don’t go crazy. Start with a small kit, like this one, and see how far it gets you.
In addition to boxes, it’s always good to have plenty of bubble wrap for fragile items (newspaper works fine for everything else), and a good quality packing tape.
Personally procured moves are not for the faint of heart! If you have any additional tips to help fellow PCSing families, please email us at info@milvil.com.
